The Creative Communications program has a special selection process. Applicants must demonstrate through a portfolio submission that they have good English language skills, an aptitude for writing, and the ability to communicate what’s happening in the world around us. This evaluation process ensures that you have the knowledge and potential to perform well in the program and in a future career in the communications industry.

The Application
After reviewing the program admission requirements, submit a full-time program online application at www.rrc.ca/apply  Paper applications are also available at www.rrc.ca/apply or at any RRC Student Service Centre, but are not recommended.

The Portfolio Submission
After meeting admission requirements 1 through 3, you will be provided with written instructions for the portfolio and it's submission deadline which is typically in mid-April. Late, incomplete, misdirected, or improperly packaged submissions will not be accepted, so it's a good idea to pay close attention to detail in the instructions, and submit your work to the correct location well before the deadline. Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to return any part of your portfolio submission, so it’s most important that you do not submit originals or your only copy of an item. 

The portfolio submission is your opportunity to show us your experience with some of the writing styles and other means of communication we emphasize in the Creative Communications program. The ideal portfolio presents good writing skills, the ability to communicate in a variety of ways, creativity, effort, accuracy and professionalism.

The portfolio submission changes every year, and may include:

Résumé and Readiness Statement: This would include an up-to-date résumé prepared for this application, together with a readiness statement of approximately 500 words describing what you have done to prepare yourself to be successful in the Creative Communications program, and why you would like to take the program. The résumé and readiness statements would be evaluated for content, organization, and writing proficiency.

Photographic Essay: You would personally shoot a series of five photographs specifically for this assignment that are related by a central theme. Themes may include architecture, nature, portraits, places, a story, or your own creative concept. The Photo Essays would be evaluated for concept, creativity, originality, composition, quality of image, effort, and presentation. 

Writing Assignments: You would be given a series of short writing exercises to complete. Specific instructions would be provided. The work would be evaluated for content, structure, creativity, originality, clarity, accuracy, and writing proficiency.

Work Portfolio: The work portfolio is your opportunity to show us that you are already experienced in some of the writing styles and other means of communication that Creative Communications emphasizes. You could supply up to three different examples of work for evaluation. If you don’t have examples of work to submit, you could create them specifically for this portfolio.

For example, you could write 

  • a review of a book, music, film, play, video game, app, graphic novel, restaurant, product, etc. 
  • a profile about a sport, sports team, an athlete, a celebrity, public figure, etc. 
  • about something topical that’s in the news 
  • a travelogue about a place you’ve visited or a trip you’ve taken, or write about your home town 
  • about a personal interest or hobby
The portfolio submissions are evaluated by the Creative Communications faculty. Applicant portfolios are ranked in order of score. Applicants are offered seats beginning with the highest score.

Program Orientation / Information Session
All applicants receive an e-mail notification from RRC in mid-May indicating whether or not they will be invited to the mandatory information session.  Successful applicants will be asked to participate in a two-hour information session in Winnipeg, in mid to late May. The session provides an opportunity for faculty to review the program calendar, guidelines, equipment, software and material requirements, recommendations to prepare to begin the program, and for applicants to ask any questions they may have.

There are limited seats for the Creative Communications program. Following the Information session, applicants will receive an e-mail indicating if they are being offered a seat.

Applicants not offered a seat may reapply for a future intake by submitting a new application, application fee, and new portfolio based on the portfolio specifications for that application year.
